[THP/FANet] Community Support Needed for Human Services

Hi all - 

Our county is going through some very challenging times. We have seen cuts
every year to the budgets for county services for years and we are now
facing the potential loss of an additional 45 million dollars of revenue
that has come from the federal reimbursement for otherwise untaxable federal
timber lands. Because of this financial crisis the county commissioners have
instructed their administrators to prepare budgets that have no allocation
for the Human Services Commission and cut or reduce many other vital
services.

 

Many local charities (like Food for Lane County, St. Vincent de Paul,
Catholic Community Charities, Sheltercare, Centro Latino, White Bird, Relief
Nursery, Pearl Buck, and Womenspace) receive significant support for the
services they provide from this fund. We would love to have your support at
an upcoming county budget meeting.   

 

If you are so inclined, wear RED and come to the public hearing on May 6th
from 8pm -9pm at Harris Hall, between the courthouse and public service
building on the corner of 8th and Oak in downtown Eugene. (The meeting
starts at 5:15, with budget reports from the department heads, but the
public hearing piece goes from 8pm -9pm. You are certainly welcome to come
to the entire meeting..) At some point during public testimony, one of our
designated speakers will ask those who support human services to stand - we
hope to show them a see of red in support of making sure that there is help
for those in need in Lane County. I hope you can join us.

 

Whether you can join us or not, if you want to address this issue, you can
also call or email the county commissioners (they listen most to their own
constituents.)
